October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and the Center for Prevention of Abuse and Verizon are teaming up to raise awareness.

The cell phone provider donated about 25–thousand dollars to support information and services for victims of domestic abuse. Verizon also wanted to bring awareness to domestic violence and the Center’s mission to help those close to home.

“You know it’s obviously a wonderful feeling and I think domestic violence affects all of us, all walks of life. And Central Illinois is no different. And to be able to give back to the community… we have many employees who life, work, and play here… it’s a wonderful, wonderful thing for us,” said

In Peoria, 15 new people contact the Center for Prevention of Abuse for help everyday.

Verizon also has a program where old cell phones are donated to abuse victims.

Bank robber finally called police on a cellphone

It took not one but two abortive high-speed police chases before the suspected bank robber finally called police on a cellphone and meekly gave himself up.

By then police had called up three sniffer dog units and a helicopter, while the man stopped the car, described as a dark Lincoln-type model by Trail RCMP three kilometres up Stuart Creek Road west of Christina Lake.

Trail RCMP later identified the man as Beau Charles Bellrichard.
